Positive Options BILD Accredited MAPA® Approved Training Centre (ATC)

In accordance with the Department of Health (DH) and Department for Education and Skills (DfES) publication relating to ‘Guidance on Restrictive Physical Interventions for People with Learning Disability and Autistic Spectrum Disorder, in Health, Education and Social Care Settings’ (2002), any organisation providing services for children and adults with learning disabilities, autism, or emotional and behavioural difficulties should have training that is accredited by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD).

BILD are currently the sole national accrediting organisation for physical interventions through its Physical Interventions Accreditation Scheme (PIAS) that was established in 2004 although a national accreditation scheme that has been scoped and led by the Department of Health, in conjunction with the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) is pending implementation.  Until such time that the national framework is formally implemented, the BILD PIAS continues to promote best practice and strengthens clinical and corporate governance arrangements for the training and use of physical interventions across the care and education sector.

Shared Accreditation Status

Under the scope of the Positive Options BILD accreditation, which was initially awarded to the Company in 2004 and was subsequently renewed in January 2008 for a further three years, any organisation that commissions a Trainer’s programme or employs Licensed MAPA® Trainers (LMTs) can apply to become a Positive Options MAPA® Approved Training Centre (ATC). The ATC status will enable the Organisation’s LMTs to deliver the Positive Options BILD Accredited MAPA® Training Programmes solely within the Organisation.  Consequently, this option will enable individual organisations to meet the requirements of DH and DfES Joint Guidance by being able to deliver BILD Accredited MAPA® Training Programmes to their staff.  Further information about this permission is contained within the main License Agreement established between Positive Options Limited and individual ATCs.

Staff of Organisations that subsequently train to become Trainers (LMTs) are required to attend and receive an annual Update and Reassessment programme.  Staff that are trained in the use of MAPA® interventions by the host MAPA® ATC are required to attend and receive annual update and refresher training.

Around half of all people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour are subject to physical interventions. High quality training, to increase staff skills and confidence and reduce injuries among staff and people who use services, is therefore critical.

    • behavioural, emotional and social difficulties
This third edition has been substantially revised and updated and provides an important point of reference for commissioners of services, those with responsibility for implementing standards as well as families, carers and all who are involved in supporting people who may be exposed to the use of restrictive physical interventions.

Price: £18

You can order this book from BookSource on 0845 370 0067 from 12 March 2010; you can also order this publication online from the BILD website - click here
